Comparison of Both magazines

Presentational devices are use differently by both magazines. NME and Q have their differences and similarities. The masthead of 'NME' is very clear and bold. Resulting in a very clear significant font as 'NME' is highly noticeable on the cover. The red makes it noticeable as there is not much red on the cover. Q magazine masthead is very visible also being red. Red seems to be very effective as it makes the mastheads stand out very much. The connotation of red could symbolise power which is something both magazines may share due to popularity. This can be tied in with main image on the front cover as it may be referring to the people on the front.

Another simarlarity is the colour of the magazines as they both use white, red and black. NME also use yellow as Q also use gold. This can help identify the magazine as colour schemes normally don't change. Colour is used very well as it highlights the main coverline on both magazine. The typography helps as it is bold this can tie in with the colour as gold and black stand out well on both magazines. this means that the main coverline and masthead can be eye-catching to any one looking at these magazine. Masthead needs to be independent and clear for any one to recognise it.

Q magazine and NME interchange down the left side of the magazine with the colour to make each coverline seem more significant. Colour has been used to emphasise the magazine and each coverline allowing both magazines to seem more appealing. font is important as the larger font shows more important story from the magazine. On NME 'James Brown RIP 1933- 2006' has been represented in different ways. The colour changes to highlight the 'RIP 1933- 2006' this is done in yellow. Looking at 'NME' black and gold show the coverlines well. The yellow shows a tie in free offer which is something that comes with the magazine. NME colour are very rock type colours yellow black white where as Q use sophiscated colours as there magazine appeals to a more mature music audience.

NME and Q seem to have very different target audiences. NME is clearly a rock magazine more aimed a teenagers then any other group. we can tell this because of their main image which is a rock band. there hair is scruffy and they are using props like guitars. Which is normally associated with rock bands. Also we can tell it is a rock magazine due to aimed at teenagers due to poster give-aways and tickets. The main image is used to attract audiences from this genre.

Q magazine is aimed at a older audience as they have adults in their main picture wearing ties dressing smart shoes etc. Which is aimed at older audience due to their dress code. the colours are more mature. Gold can be linked into wealth which can link into the people on the front cover.

The background of the magazines are very different as q magazine is more appealing to older audiences. A white plained coloured background may show the target audience of the magazine due to how it's matured look. Also this magazine doesn't have tie ins e.g like giveaway , posters etc. But NME do which is linked into young audiences. Q magazine is more relaxed as there is less on the front cover.

Overall both magazine appeal to their audiences very well as we can tell from their font. Good typography has aided them to do this alongside their photographs. The magazine layout is represent well which helps to identify audience. Colour scheme has be chosen and used well. Coverlines are clear. Mast head and main image fit in with the type of magazine well.
